What Are the Three PMI-PBA Requirement Categories?
PMI-PBA eligibility rests on education level, documented business analysis experience, and 35 contact hours of formal training. Every path requires all three; only the required years of experience change based on your education.

Which of the Three PMI-PBA Eligibility Paths Applies to You?
PMI offers three eligibility paths based on education level. A GAC-accredited degree requires the least experience at 24 months; a secondary diploma alone requires the most at 60 months.

Does Your Job Title Have to Say “Business Analyst” to Qualify?
No. PMI evaluates whether your day-to-day work matches business analysis functions — needs assessment, requirements elicitation, solution evaluation — not your job title. A Project Manager, Product Owner, or Systems Analyst who performs BA work qualifies the same as someone with “Business Analyst” in their title.
This is the single most common reason qualified candidates assume they’re ineligible before they even check. If your actual responsibilities include gathering requirements, defining scope from a business needs perspective, or validating that a delivered solution meets business objectives, that work counts — regardless of what your business card says.
What Counts as Qualifying Business Analysis Experience?
Qualifying experience must fall within the past 8 years, align with PMI’s five business analysis domains — Needs Assessment, Planning, Analysis, Traceability and Monitoring, and Evaluation — and be documented as non-overlapping project entries.
- Document each project separately, with your specific business analysis responsibilities and duration — PMI reviews entries individually.
- Map your experience against the five PMI-PBA domains rather than generic job duties, since PMI evaluates against that framework specifically.
- Include BA work performed inside a broader role (e.g., a Project Manager who also gathered and validated requirements), even without a formal BA title.
- Exclude experience older than 8 years — PMI-PBA’s lookback window is tighter than some other PMI certifications.
What Counts Toward the 35 Contact Hours of Training?
The 35 contact hours must come from formal, documented training in business analysis practices — live courses, PMI Authorized Training Partner programs, or accredited coursework — not informal reading or self-study.
A PMI Authorized Training Partner boot camp is the most common way candidates satisfy this requirement in a single engagement, since it combines the training-hour requirement with direct exam preparation. Training completed for other credentials (a PMP prep course, for instance) does not automatically count unless its content specifically covers business analysis practices.

Do I need a business degree to qualify for PMI-PBA?
No. PMI accepts any bachelor’s degree or higher for Set B, and a secondary diploma alone qualifies under Set A with additional experience. The degree’s subject matter doesn’t need to relate to business analysis specifically.
Can Project Management experience count toward PMI-PBA eligibility?
Only the portion of that experience that involved actual business analysis functions — requirements gathering, needs assessment, solution evaluation — counts. General project scheduling, budgeting, and team coordination does not satisfy the BA experience requirement on its own.
How many PDUs does PMI-PBA require to renew, and how does that compare to PMI-ACP?
PMI-PBA requires 60 PDUs every 3 years to renew, double the 30 PDUs PMI-ACP requires over the same cycle — closer to PMP’s renewal load than PMI-ACP’s.
