CPMAI vs Google AI/ML Certifications

CPMAI evaluates your skills in the governance of AI projects and business alignment. Google, meanwhile, has AI credentials at two different levels of sophistication. Firstly, at a more advanced level, Google also has the Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification. This requires building a model in the Google Cloud. In contrast, one of the more beginner level certificates is the Google AI Essentials certification. Here, participants build a prompt and learn the basics of AI on the Coursera platform. Neither of these certificates comes close to fulfilling the skills assessed in CPMAI, thus the comparison of the two is more about the fulfillment of the skills gap, and which of the two is “better” — see the full CPMAI vs Other AI & PM Certifications breakdown for how CPMAI stacks up more broadly.

What Are Google’s Main AI/ML Certification Options?

Google has two distinct levels of AI certifications. On the higher level is the Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification which is built through the design and deployment of ML systems at an advanced level on the Google Cloud. In contrast, one of the beginner level certificates is the Google AI Essentials certificate which builds prompt engineering skills on the Coursera platform. When placing these two certificates at the ends of the Google AI credential spectrum, people tend to do a lot of research and study, and in turn build a false understanding when looking for “Google AI certifications”.

.How Does CPMAI Compare to Google’s Professional Machine Learning Engineer?

CPMAI and Google’s Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification test almost entirely non-overlapping skills. CPMAI looks at AI project governance and business alignment, while Google’s certification looks at the ability to design, build and productionize ML models on Google Cloud. According to Google, the applicants should have at least three years of industry experience and at least a year working with Google Cloud. Compared to Google’s certification, where applicants have to fulfill certain criteria, CPMAI is a completely open enrollment examination

How Does CPMAI Compare to Google AI Essentials?

CPMAI is a professional certification that demands 21 hours of training and testing. It evaluates project management skills across five weighted domains. Google AI Essentials, on the other hand, is a beginner literacy course that is ready in less than 10 hours. It outlines the use of general AI tools. There are no formal exams or professional certification associated with it. Google AI Essentials is for building AI fluency for any job and CPMAI is for governing or leading AI project delivery.

.Is a Technical Google Certification Necessary for AI Project Managers?

No. A project manager leading AI initiatives does not need Google’s Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification. A CPMAI certification will cover project governance, which is what project managers need, whereas the Google certification is more hands on and involves building models which project managers do not. Google’s more technical certification is designed for the data scientists and ML engineers a project manager works with as opposed to the project manager’s role itself.

A project manager leading AI initiatives requires the CPMAI certification in order to build the skills required for business alignment and data readiness.
A data scientist or ML engineer building the models requires the Google Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification.
A professional looking to become more AI literate for general productivity, unrelated to formal project leadership, may consider Google AI Essentials sufficient in and of itself.

.Can I Hold CPMAI and a Google Tech Certification?

The addition of CPMAI and a Google certification to a CV would enhance the applicant’s qualifications. The two certifications have complementary skills, but will be complementary in different ways on dissimilar AI projects. Having a project manager with CPMAI will help them understand and engage the Google-certified engineer. The CPMAI certification provides project managers with the vocabulary needed to communicate with the tech team. The six phases of CPMAI provide a shared vocabulary for the innovation of AI to address the challenges of the business and of the technology to bridge the gaps of the two.

Where Do You Learn to Develop AI Project Management Skills?

PMTI provides hands-on training for the CPMAI certification. Their courses include the five key areas of the PMI-CPMAI exam as well as the six phases of the CPMAI methodology.

CPMAI vs Google AI/ML Certifications FAQs

Should a project manager aim for the Google Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification instead of CPMAI?

Absolutely not. Project management has nothing to do with having deep technical skills. In this case, the Google certification covers hands-on ML engineering, while CPMAI is more aligned to project management.

Does Google AI Essentials Certification satisfy a professional business requirement?

This is a completion certificate for a baseline Coursera course that does not contain an exam and is proctored. It should not be seen in the same light as CPMAI or Google’s Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification.

Does the Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification from Google require coding?

Google’s Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification would not require a user with significant coding experience. Google Cloud requires some technical skills which are needed for that role, and therefore, would not be complimentary to CPMAI.

Will CPMAI course completion require technical skills?

No – CPMAI was designed for project managers; as long as you understand the principles of project management, you do not need any technical skills for this course.
