The PMP exam changed on 9 July 2026, and PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP) courses changed first. PMI launched the updated instructor-led PMP course for ATPs on 14 April 2026, 12 weeks before the exam. The Business Environment domain gained 18 points of weight, from 8% to 26%. Training completed before 1 December 2026 stays eligible.
This guide covers what changed in the exam, what changed in ATP course content, and what a learner who trained before the update reviews. It stays on training. For the full ATP definition, read PMI Authorized Training Partner (PMI-ATP) Since 2003.
What Changed in ATP PMP Courses on 9 July 2026?
ATP PMP courses changed in April, not July. PMI launched the updated instructor-led PMP course, student materials, practice exams, and Study Hall enhancements for ATPs on 14 April 2026. The exam itself changed on 9 July 2026.
| Date | Event |
| 13 November 2025 | PMI announces the new PMP exam for July 2026 |
| 14 April 2026 | Updated instructor-led PMP course, student materials, kits, new PMP practice exams, and Study Hall enhancements go live for ATPs |
| 8 July 2026 | Last day of the previous exam |
| 9 July 2026 | New PMP exam launches |
| 1 December 2026 | Live PMP training counts only through an ATP, a China REP, or an eligible accredited program |
Before 14 April, PMI barred ATPs from teaching the new exam. Instructors received the new instructor materials early, in English, to prepare. They could not launch courses until the public learning launch.
Which ECO Domains Changed Weight?
All 3 domains changed. People fell from 42% to 33%, Process fell from 50% to 41%, and Business Environment rose from 8% to 26%. The outline now counts 26 tasks, down from 35, with Business Environment holding 8 of them.
| Domain | Weight before 9 July 2026 | Weight now | Tasks now |
| People | 42% | 33% | 8 |
| Process | 50% | 41% | 10 |
| Business Environment | 8% | 26% | 8 |
Business Environment carries the largest shift. It grew from 4 tasks to 8. Check how many hours a course gives Business Environment.
PMI’s outline defines enablers as illustrative examples of the work behind each task. They illustrate. They do not form an exhaustive list.
What Else Changed in the Exam That ATP Courses Cover?
Five exam features changed: a 240-minute duration, a 170 scored plus 10 unscored question split, two new question types, a 60% share of agile and hybrid items, and scenarios that add AI, sustainability, and stakeholder engagement.
- Duration. 240 minutes with two 10-minute breaks, up from 230.
- Questions. 180 total: 170 scored and 10 unscored pretest items, up from 175 scored and 5 unscored.
- New formats. Case or scenario questions and graphic-based questions.
- Approach mix. About 40% of items represent predictive approaches. The other 60% splits between adaptive or agile and hybrid. The mix runs across all 3 domains.
- Scenario themes. PMI adds AI, sustainability, and stakeholder engagement to project-based scenarios, and shifts emphasis toward outcomes, value, and business impact.
PMI states that the core principles and approaches of the PMP exam remain the same. The change is in weight and framing, not in the foundations.
How Do ATPs Update Their Course Content?
PMI updates the PMI-licensed kits and pushes them to ATPs. Existing kits update automatically. PMI builds the content on the exam content outline, not the PMBOK Guide, so a new PMBOK edition does not change it.
Four mechanics govern the update:
- Kits. Existing instructor and student kits received the new content automatically.
- Instructors. PMI gave instructors the English instructor materials early, so they prepared before the public launch.
- Basis. The content follows the Examination Content Outline. PMI states that the PMBOK Guide Eighth Edition has no impact on PMI-provided ATP course material.
- Languages. The instructor-led PMP course ships in 10 core languages, from English to Korean.
PMI keeps revising after launch. Weekly updates ran from 18 May 2026, and the student workbook reached Version 4.1 on 4 August 2026. The full inventory sits in PMI-Licensed Course Content: What ATP Students Receive.
PMI also runs an instructor-led CAPM to PMP course through ATPs, in English at launch. An active CAPM certification waives the 35-hour training requirement.
Does Training Completed Before the Update Stay Eligible?
Yes. Training completed before 1 December 2026 remains eligible under the requirements in place at the time, and qualifying hours never expire. Courses built for the earlier exam still count, but the content outline shifted, so review the gaps.
PMI states that training taken for an earlier version of the PMP exam can still satisfy the 35-hour requirement. PMI adds one instruction: compare the course content with the current outline to identify topics you still need to study.
A learner who trained on the old course reviews in this order:
- Study Business Environment first. It gained 18 points of weight and 4 tasks.
- Practice the new formats: case or scenario questions and graphic-based questions.
- Rebalance toward agile and hybrid. They now make up 60% of items.
- Time a full-length practice exam at 240 minutes.
- Check the training hours and records for your application.
Keep the completion certificate and the syllabus. PMI requests proof if your application is selected for audit.
Which Study Tools Match the 2026 Exam?
PMI released new PMP practice exams and Study Hall enhancements on 14 April 2026. Books and practice exams alone do not meet the 35-hour requirement.
PMI sells both tools separately from the ATP course, so ask each provider whether the fee includes them. The ECO states that books and practice exams alone are not eligible training. They support the training. They do not replace it.
How Do You Check That Your ATP Course Matches the 2026 Exam?
Ask the ATP for the kit version, confirm the course follows the July 2026 content outline, and verify the provider in the PMI directory. A course that cites the 42/50/8 weights teaches the previous exam.
Run these checks before you enroll:
- Verify the provider in the PMI ATP directory. The steps sit in How to Verify a PMI Authorized Training Partner in the Official ATP Directory.
- Request the kit version and the date of the outline it follows.
- Ask how the course covers Business Environment, the 26% domain.
- Confirm the course includes case or scenario and graphic-based practice.
- Get the instructor’s name and ATP badge in writing.
