Project Risk Management – e-Learning (24 PDU)

This course is appropriate for middle and upper management who wish to advance their knowledge and understanding of project risk management for practical application in the market place. Ideally, course takers should have previously passed the Project Management Institute’s (“PMI”) Project Management Professional (“PMP”), or similar exam, and/or have significant experience in running projects.

The PMI Talent Triangle® represents the three core skill areas that every project professional must develop to stay current and competitive. PMI uses this framework to ensure that certification holders maintain balanced, relevant professional development.

1. Ways of Working (Technical Project Management)

Covers the tools, techniques, methodologies, and frameworks that help you deliver projects effectively.
Includes: Agile, Scrum, Kanban, Predictive methods, hybrid approaches, six sigma, requirements management, modeling, metrics, and analysis techniques.

2. Power Skills (Leadership)

Focuses on interpersonal and leadership capabilities needed to guide teams and influence stakeholders.
Includes: communication, conflict resolution, negotiation, stakeholder engagement, coaching, problem-solving, emotional intelligence.

3. Business Acumen (Strategic & Business Management)

Relates to understanding the broader organizational environment and aligning projects to business goals.
Includes: benefits realization, market awareness, strategic alignment, budgeting, compliance, risk management, and industry-specific knowledge.

PMI requires that PDUs earned for recertification fit into one of these three skill areas to ensure well-rounded professional growth.

How to Renew Your PMI Certification (Step-by-Step)

PMI certifications must be renewed every three years. Renewal is done through PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Program.

Step 1: Earn the Required PDUs

Earn Professional Development Units through:

PMI-approved training (such as PMTI)
Online courses/webinars
Self-study
Reading, authoring articles, or creating content
Giving presentations or teaching
Working as a practitioner (maximum allowed PDUs vary per certification)

PDUs must align with the PMI Talent Triangle® categories.

Step 2: Report PDUs in the PMI CCRS System

Once submitted, most PDUs are approved automatically.

Step 3: Pay the Renewal Fee

When you have earned all required PDUs, you’ll see a “Renew” button in your CCR Dashboard.
You must pay the renewal fee (varies for members vs. non-members).

Step 4: Receive Your Updated Certification Cycle

PMI renews your certification for an additional 3 years, starting from your original expiration date — not from the date you renew.

All PMI certifications follow the 3-year renewal cycle.

PMP® – Project Management Professional

Total PDUs Required: 60
Breakdown:

Minimum 35 PDUs in Education, across the Talent Triangle:
- Ways of Working: 8
- Power Skills: 8
- Business Acumen: 8
- Plus 11 more in any area of the Education category
Maximum 25 PDUs in Giving Back (optional)

CAPM® – Certified Associate in Project Management

As of the new renewal rules (effective 2023+):
Total PDUs Required: 15
Breakdown:

Minimum 9 PDUs in Education, with at least:
- Ways of Working: 2
- Power Skills: 2
- Business Acumen: 2
Remaining 3 PDUs can be in any area
Maximum 6 PDUs in Giving Back (optional)

Note: Prior to 2023, CAPM did not require PDUs and required retesting. This has been replaced by the CCR PDU cycle. CAPM now renews like other certifications.

PMI-ACP® – Agile Certified Practitioner

Total PDUs Required: 30
Breakdown:

Minimum 18 PDUs in Education, with at least:
- Ways of Working: 4
- Power Skills: 4
- Business Acumen: 4
Remaining 6 educational PDUs can be in any category
Maximum 12 PDUs in Giving Back (optional)

PMI-PBA® – Professional in Business Analysis

Total PDUs Required: 30
Breakdown:

Minimum 18 PDUs in Education, including:
- Ways of Working: 4
- Power Skills: 4
- Business Acumen: 4
Remaining 6 PDUs can be earned in any Education subcategory
