Review CAPM Certification Requirements

Candidates wishing to sit for the CAPM exam must first provide proof that they meet PMI’s eligibility requirements which are a high school diploma and 23 hours of formal project management education. Accepted documentation includes copies of your diploma, transcript, and course completion certificates. Review the latest CAPM handbook on PMI.org to ensure that your application data matches qualification criteria. Always verify eligibility before starting any paid training or submitting an application.

Complete 23 Hours of Training

Complete 23 hours of training through PMI-authorized  providers offering project management coursework that aligns with the PMBOK® Guide. This training builds foundational knowledge for the CAPM exam and satisfies PMI’s formal education requirement. Online or instructor-led formats must provide contact-hour certificates and details about the topics covered in each course. Choose structured programs with mock tests and topic-based modules to help you prepare for the exam.

Apply on PMI’s Website

Register for the CAPM exam by creating a myPMI account. The application includes entering educational and training details along with proof of completing formal secondary education. PMI will then evaluate your training credentials which can take up to 10 business days if not selected for an audit. Make sure that your application details align with PMI’s guidelines to ensure a smooth application process and avoid triggering an audit.

Schedule CAPM Certification Test

PMI approves applications in 10-30 business days depending on if they conduct an audit. Once they approve an application, candidates for the CAPM exam need to pay the exam fee of $225 (PMI members) or $300 (non-members). Once payment is processed, candidates may schedule their exam through Pearson VUE using their PMI approval ID. Pearson VUE scheduling is first-come, first-serve, and candidates can choose between in-person and online exam formats.

Since scheduling is often restricted by testing center availability, candidates should schedule their exam sooner rather than later. Scheduling early gives greater flexibility in time and location plus allows for time to set up all software requirements for online exam takers.

Practice CAPM Exam Content

Candidates should prepare for the CAPM exam by following a structured study plan anchored around their exam date. First, begin by reviewing the official CAPM Exam Content Outline which is based on the PMBOK Guide. This outline helps align your study focus with the tested domains: project scope, time, cost, quality, integration, and stakeholder management.

Organize your study plan around these areas and prioritize low-confidence topics. Use summary sheets, flashcards, and outline-based practice questions to strengthen topic recall and exam coverage. Most candidates also create a tracking system to log mock exam scores, monitor progress over domains , and assess overall readiness.

Practice exams are crucial to reinforce knowledge, apply concepts, and simulate real test conditions. Question banks and simulators improve time management, familiarity with question formats, and overall readiness. Using mock exams regularly helps identify gaps in understanding and hone your study. Additional study tools should come from PMI-authorized providers or recognized platforms that reflect current CAPM exam standards.

Take the Proctored CAPM Exam

Take the proctored CAPM exam on your scheduled exam date by either going in person or logging into Pearson VUE’s secure online proctoring system. The exam is 150 questions with a time limit of 3 hours. Candidates receive their results immediately following submission of the exam.

For online tests, a live proctor monitors via webcam; system checks, ID verification, and environment scans are mandatory. Pearson VUE requires candidates to take the exam in a private, quiet space that is free of distraction, noise, or outside influences. Dual monitors, notes, and additional technology are not allowed. Candidates must verify all system requirements in advance and follow all proctoring procedures to avoid being disqualified.

For in-person tests, candidates should arrive at least 30 minutes early and have a government-issued ID. The testing center provides lockers for your personal items; candidates may not have cell phones, earbuds, or other electronics with them in the testing room. They may not leave the testing center for any reason during the exam. Follow all testing center rules to avoid disqualification.

Receive CAPM Certification

Candidates receive their pass/fail status upon completing the exam. In either case, a copy of their results will also be sent to their PMI dashboard along with an exam score breakdown. Because PMI posts digital certificates within a few days, successful applicants can quickly download their CAPM certification and update their resume and LinkedIn profile with the credential. This is especially important as employers value the certification for junior project manager, junior analyst, and project coordinator roles.

Maintain CAPM Certification

Maintaining the CAPM certification is done by earning 15 PDUs (Professional Development Units) within the 3-year validity period. PDUs support continuous learning and are submitted via your myPMI account. Failure to renew the CAPM certification within the three-year window results in having to retake the exam.

Acceptable PDU activities include attending webinars, taking courses, or contributing to project management knowledge. In order to reinstate it, you will have to retake the exam. Actively tracking PDUs can ensure that renewal is completed on time and avoid last-minute renewal issues.
