First, both certifications have the same prerequisites: CPMAI and AI-900. However, the two cover completely different content. AI-900 assesses the understanding of fundamental concepts of AI, ML, computer vision, and NLP (Natural Language Processing) and Generative AI on Azure. CPMAI focuses on the project management and governance of AI across all platforms. How Does CPMAI Compare to AI-102 (Azure AI Engineer Associate)? 
CPMAI and AI-102 are even more different than CPMAI and AI-900. AI-102 is a developer exam that’s quite challenging and requires candidates to build applications and call Azure AI services using SDKs, deal with asynchronous programming and APIs, and debug. On the other hand, CPMAI requires no such technical fluency. AI-102 validates the same skill as Google’s Professional Machine Learning Engineer, which is hands-on technical implementation, only restricted to Microsoft’s Azure as compared to Google Cloud.

Does AI-900 hold value as a precursor to CPMAI?
AI-900, for $99, takes little time to prepare for compared to CPMAI’s 21 hours and doesn’t cover project management content. It doesn’t add any project management framework content either and is a useful addition for project managers without AI/ML understanding. It’s not a hard requirement as there are no prerequisites for CPMAI, but a project manager coming to CPMAI without AI/ML would find AI-900 useful to build some understanding of certain data-readiness and model-evaluation terminology.
AI-900 introduces some basic terminology of AI/ML and some concepts like a model, training data, and computer vision and NLP.
CPMAI also has some terminology of project management when discussing the management of risks of AI projects.
CPMAI is the more useful of the two and you aren’t required to take AI-900 before it.
Microsoft AI Certifications for AI Project Managers:
An AI project manager does not need AI-102 as that certification focuses on skills related to the developer-level implementation, which is outside the bounds of a project manager’s role. A project manager should consider AI-900 as a supplementary certification offered by Microsoft and should also consider the CPMAI certification.
