Each question’s scenario provides a project context, whether in terms of team size, stage of delivery, stakeholder activity, type of impediment, or closure of a retrospective. Of the 4 response options, 2 are correct and the other 2, while dealing with PMI’s agile mindset, are of poor quality. Candidates who eliminate the 2 correct options and select 1 of the poor options, are more likely to fail than candidates who select the option that is of quality most likely to be preferred by PMI among the options presented.

How Many Questions Are on the PMI-ACP Exam?

There are 120 questions on the PMI-ACP Exam. You will have 180 minutes to complete the exam. This averages out to 1.5 minutes for each question. You will have more time to answer the questions on the PMI-ACP exam than you will for the PMP Exam, but the PMI-ACP exam will present you with more complex scenarios. PMI-ACP Exam questions require identification of the Agile framework and reasoning across different frameworks. This will require more effort to answer compared to a predictive methodology question you will encounter in the PMP exam.

PMI-ACP exam questions are more challenging than candidates expect because the exam is focused on PMI’s agile mindset preference, not the mastery of framework lexicon. The 4 most common failure patterns are selecting the most proactive answer (instead of the most collaborative), selecting an answer that cites framework-specific terminology rather than applying agile principles, conflating Scrum roles with authority, and miscalculating the number of questions on Lean and Kanban.

4 Obstacles to Answer Questions Correctly — With Remedy

Obstacle 1 — Selecting the Most Proactive Answer

PMI-ACP exam questions invariably present (escalating, reassigning, implementing the change) as the most decisive answer, and (holding a retrospective, surfacing the impediment with transparency, integrating the team) as the most collaborative answer. PMI almost always prefers the collaborative facilitation answer to the most decisive management action. Candidates with traditional project management experience tend to select the most decisive answer more frequently than agile practitioners.

Obstacle 2 — Mechanistic Application of Framework Lexicon

A PMI-ACP exam question framed within the Scrum context does not necessarily have a Scrum-specific answer. PMI is less interested in whether candidates know the Scrum lexicon, and is more interested in their understanding of the rationale behind the practices of agile. A candidate who answers “sprint retrospective” to every single team improvement question will likely miss questions that ask for a Lean kaizen event or a Kanban service delivery review in similar contexts.

The PMI-ACP exam asks about the limits of authority of the Product Owner, the Scrum Master, and the development team. The Scrum Master does not manage the team, and the Product Owner does not dictate the technical implementation of the backlog items. The Scrum Master taking on a management role, and the development team accepting a role of taking on work assigned from outside, are examples of authority violations that the exam expects candidates to identify, not accept.

The combination of Lean and Kanban is the topic of about 20–25% of the PMI-ACP exam, which is more than what most study guides allot for Lean and Kanban. 3 PMI-ACP Criteria for Test Readiness Benchmarks

Benchmark 1 — Domain Consistency

The lowest score for any ECO domain must be at least 65%. The PMI-ACP has a domain gap that is apparent in the 15–20 Team Performance questions in the exam. So it would be of little comfort to the person who scored 78% overall with only 58% in Team Performance.

Benchmark 2 — Framework Balance

The scores of questions on Scrum, Kanban, and Lean must differ by no more than 5 points. Individuals who score highly in Scrum due to the imbalanced preparation, with no preparation for Lean and Kanban, show no improvement in Lean and Kanban scores. There must be a balance in the scores of the questions in the 3 main frameworks.

Benchmark 3 — Time Management

A practice test must be completed in less than 160 minutes. A buffer of 20 minutes is left for the test, allowing time for review of flagged questions. Those who bring a time management issue to the practice test will have the same issue with the real test.

What Is the Best Way to Interpret PMI-ACP Mock Test Score?

Results of the PMI-ACP mock tests must be evaluated at 3 levels: overall score, score by domain, and by framework error analysis. The overall score indicates test readiness. The score by domain identifies the specific ECO domain to be addressed. The by framework error analysis identifies whether knowledge of the framework is missing, for example Lean, or if reasoning is the issue, for example the selection of a decisive action over a collaborative facilitation across the frameworks.

Step 1 — Log Incorrect Answers by Domain and Framework

After a simulation, log incorrect answers by ECO domain and framework. Write Agile domain, the framework invoked (Scrum, Kanban, Lean, XP), and the question number. After 2 simulations, look for the top 5 domain-framework pairs. These pairs show the gaps in preparation with the highest impact.

Step 2 — Assign the Error to One of Three PMI-ACP Error Types

  • Framework Knowledge Gap — Candidate does not know the Lean, Kanban, or XP concept required by the question. Go to the Agile Practice Guide and read that framework.<br>

Step 3 — Do Framework-Specific Sessions

Do framework specific sessions before doing a full simulation. After Step 2 error types, do untimed sessions on the top 2 domain-framework pairs (weakest). Once the specific domains have framework scores of 70% or higher, do a full 120-question simulation.

Step 4 — Verify Mindset Correction

A knowledge correction is indicated by a score increasing in targeted sessions. If a score only increases in targeted sessions but decreases in full simulations, this reflects a reasoning gap — the candidate knows the content but resorts to non-agile reasoning when faced with full exams. Correcting this gap requires extended, timed practice, rather than content study.

Candidates should solve at least 500 and no more than 800 PMI-ACP practice questions. For the PMI-ACP exam, solving a minimum of 500 practice questions helps candidates identify and work with agile frameworks. Candidates solving more than 800 practice questions may recognize agile frameworks and scenario questions, but their practice will not help them with agile concepts and reasoning.

Practice Strategy: Practice answering at least 500 unique PMI-ACP scenario questions. With 800 practice questions, candidates will repeatedly identify scenario questions and answer frameworks. PMI-ACP exam has 120 practice questions and candidates should work with each framework up to 800 practice questions.

3-Phase Question Volume Strategy

Phase 1 — Domain-Specific Practice Without a Time Limit (200 Questions)

Candidates break their practice into untimed sessions of 25–30 questions. Candidates do 7–30 question sessions without a time limit.

Phase 2 — Full Test With a Time Limit (360 Questions)

Does PMI-ACP Practice Test Performance Substitute for In-Person Agile Training?

No. PMI-ACP practice test performance does not substitute for in-person agile training. A candidate that has an extensive background in waterfall project management is likely to select the constructive management response from the PMI-ACP exam as the management response is the instinctively correct response based on their experience. Reading the Agile Manifesto, or any PMI agile document for that matter, is closer to a waste of time compared to the value of working with a skilled instructor. A skilled instructor is able to identify that pattern, and correct it, in a single session.

Real-Time Framework and Concept Correction

Practice tests only indicate which answers are incorrect. They do not explain why a candidate may choose the “tell the team what to do” answer in a servant leadership question. An instructor can identify the incorrect answer choice as “you are applying a PM authority model to a Scrum Master role” and will likely correct the concept before it contributes to 10 incorrect answers on the real exam.

Contact Hour Verification

PMI needs proof of 21 contact hours of agile training from a registered provider before allowing an application to take the exam. The time spent on practice tests will be credited as 0 of the contact hours.
