What does CSM mean? 
CSM (Certified Scrum Master) from Scrum Alliance, upon completion of 2, 8 hour days, with a certified Scrum trainer, awards the candidates the ability to facilitate the Scrum framework. This includes the ability to run sprints, the four core Scrum ceremonies, and the removal of blockers. The CSM is not industry specific, so it doesn’t matter if the Scrum Master being certified is working on an AI project or a mobile app project, the Scrum frameworks are the same regardless.

What Does CPMAI Certify That CSM Doesn’t?
The CPMAI certification covers project specific AI in a Scrum context. This includes evaluating and justifying the use of a model when data is present, assessing an AI tool for model risk and other considerations in an operational context, and embedding the tool within a framework for Control and Governance. In terms of facilitating the process and the decisions a team makes, the CSM and CPMAI certifications are equivalent. CPMAI addresses the decisions and phases of an AI project that CSM and the various iterations of the Scrum Guide are not concerned with, as Scrum was created for the iterative delivery of non-AI software.

Why Doesn’t Scrum Alone Cover AI Project Risk?
Scrum’s ceremonies highlight team activity and project progress. However, how can a team be continuously working on a solution that is destined to fail? While Scrum ceremonies facilitate and coordinate activities, they don’t check whether sufficient data exists, whether a deployed model is drifting, or whether a model has bias. Scrum can confidently state a team is working, but cannot confirm whether the work a team is performing each sprint is of high quality and pertains to AI.
Scrum does not assess a model’s accuracy and fairness, and does not address the concern of model drift after it has been deployed. Scrum also does not evaluate whether an AI solution is more appropriate than a solution based on a different approach.
Can you integrate Scrum ceremonies into CPMAI’s 6 phases?
Yes, because they operate in different domains. A team could use CPMAI’s six phases to define the boundaries of work to be evaluated and decided during one or more Scrum sprints. In practice, this is a common approach: when Scrum defines “how does the team work,” and CPMAI defines “what AI-specific milestones and gates does this project need,” neither framework relinquishes the other.

What is the First Certification You Should Get?
CSM is for those who want to learn how to facilitate a Scrum team regardless of the type of project they’re working on. No. The content of CSM is completely general. The content focuses on the Scrum framework and is the same whether the team is working on AI, ML, or any project.

Does CPMAI mean you no longer need CSM?

What is a tougher certification needed to be earned?
